A Mercedes-Benz G5 is a prewar car with the same offroad capabilities as a modern Mercedes-Benz Unimog. It has four-wheel steering and unequal-length upper and lower wishbones with helical springs suspension. The doors are made out of canvas and can be rolled into a roll to the door pillar up front, as can be seen in the photo. It is a SUV avant la lettre, KUV rather, with the K standing for Killing. The Kübelwagen as we’ve often seen in war movies, short for Kübelsitzwagen, meaning bucket seat car, was a military vehicle designed by Ferdinand Porsche and built by Volkswagen during World War II for use by the German military both Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS. Based heavily on the Volkswagen Beetle, used by the Gerries like the jeep by the Allies. The cars in Rommel's racing team had the standard color of the desert, sand beige.

There are many explanations of the origin of the word Jeep, all of which have proven difficult to verify. The most widely held theory is that the military designation of GP begat the term Jeep and holds that the vehicle bore the designation “GP” for “Government Purposes” or “General Purpose”, which was phonetically slurred into the word Jeep. It became the primary light 4-wheel-drive vehicle of the United States Army and Allies during World War II. In a promotion film the Jeep was shown in rough terrain, flying from bump to the next, proving the myth it really could fly, dragging the little trailer hopping behind.

The successor to the Jeep became the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV or Humvee) is a military 4WD motor vehicle created by AM General. It has largely supplanted the roles formerly served by smaller Jeeps. Primarily used by the United States military, it is also used by numerous other countries and organizations and even in civilian adaptations. The civilian Hummer series was also straightaway inspired by the HMMWVs.
