The Four Holer. For 1953, Buick made their legendary move to V-8 power, mating the mighty Fireball to the oh-so smooth Dynaflow transmission. In late night testing during race week, the Dana boys took the family Buick Super Estate Wagon around the challenging Brynfan Tydden road course west of Harvey's Lake, Pa. The V-8 made a breathtaking improvement on the predecessor's straight-8 acceleration. But to the tester's dismay, the family bolide, supplied with bias ply tires and lounge-sofa suspension, was simply terrifying around the narrow, tree-lined, downhill reverse-camber turns of the circuit.

Editor's Note: Our map predates the establishment of the Brynfan Tydden road course; the race photograph covers the farm around which the track ran -- on roads so narrow that engines were limited to two litres. The Dana family test mule was a 1953 Buick Super Estate Wagon in a particularly fetching metallic blue. The model shown is a Buick Roadmaster in metallic green, the top of the line, hence fitted with a spotlight/right outside mirror and four portholes (4) instead of three (3) as on the Dana Buick Super.
