Jetbirds.

Fifty years after the GM Firebirds
the jetbirds are still flying.

Firebird II.

The vision of General Motors on people transport in the future, fifty years ago. The only envisioned element that found its way to the automobiles that were built later was the tailfin. Three Firebird concepts were dreamed up: I, II and III, all more or less based on the lines of jet fighters of that day, of which number II was most likely to ever become an everyday automobile.

Easy Rider in Providence.

Saturday, our red brick building with its signature round chimney. Our apartment takes up the nine windows on the top floor, left-hand end. It appears we could toss a heavy rock and land it in the lobby of the Biltmore Hotel. Or City Hall - mansard roof crowned with a green copper widows' walk and round windows - between us and the capitol, and site of the Plunder Dome events that sent the mayor to jail - 10 minutes away on foot. Cheers, Lewis

Concept for Lexus LF-A Roadster.

Thou shalt obey!

Mazda Furai. Mad Mazda concept

Race-inspired two-seater swoops in - we strap in for a wild ride.
By Isaac Hernandez

Forget the Lexus LF-A Roadster, and turn your eyes away from the Audi R8 V12 TDI. The fastest, most extreme car to make its debut at this year's Detroit Motor Show was produced by Mazda. And to prove it, the Japanese company invited Auto Express aboard for a very special ride. We didn't need asking twice. The first pictures of the sensational Furai (Issue 994) revealed what an incredible piece of design the car is. But as we found out, the wild lines are really only half the story. Named after the Japanese phrase for "the sound of the wind", the two-seat Furai was built by Mazda engineers from a list of dream parts. This included cutting-edge components and materials from the world of motorsport, and one of the most famous engines in the company's history. More.

At last the Aston Martin Rapide.
Text: Ross Pinnock / Photos: SB-Medien.

British firm is out in the cold with its new four-door supercar.
They're fast workers at Aston Martin! As this picture proves, the firm's four-door Rapide is speeding through development. Our spies caught the saloon as it underwent some winter testing. The virtually undisguised prototype shows how similar the production model, due on sale next year, will look to the original concept version, which made its debut at the 2006 Detroit Motor Show. The sleek Rapide will face stiff competition from Porsche's forthcoming Panamera when it hits the road. Based on these pictures, however, the Brit has the edge in terms of design. http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/autoexpressnews/215262/aston_rapide_spy_shots.html

Lewis probably may tell us where this concourse
has taken place, in Virginia, Alabama, no clue.
And Max, or Gijs might know which very special
concept car this could be, r.s.v.p.
"Ain't this special?"

Hi Ary, You hurled the challenge and I am Buffaloed. Well, actually, Pebble Beached. Definitely from one of the great Concours d'Elegances on California's Monterey peninsula. And definitely a Ghia one-off. The brand of car? Ghia always monkeyed around with the grilles on their concepts, and this one I simply can't figure out. And the picture won't blow up cleanly enough to read the script on the fender. Max will have the answer, I am sure. Cheers, Lewis
