A path of my own youth.

Stark and gloomy.

Is it my faulty memory or are people using the canals for fun much more than ever?
De Phlog keeps showing boats new and old all over town.
In Guy's pictures... Ari's snaps... Bart's boat shots, boats big and small chug their way along, creeping under bridges, happy sailors waving at people on shore. They motor down the Prinsengracht pouring each other princely drinks. On the Keizersgracht, converted lifeboats putter along while everyday families ogle 16th Century splendor. It's hard to single out anything specific from the Singel, there are too many choices. Teams of rowers speed elegantly along the Herengracht in varnished wooden boats fit for a gentleman, past shiny (and not necessarily elegant) aluminum rental boats tied to canal walls awaiting their rowers.
From the stern poles of boats everywhere, the Dutch tri-kleur basks in the sunshine and flaps in various breezes.
According to the New York Times, that batch of thugs that fought their way to second place in the World Cup were cheered along a canal parade route. (A mighty effort, too bad the final was so filled with red and yellow.) Oh, but wait, those are the Spanish colors! Was that a plot by some sinister FIFA cabal?
In any case, today's canals don't seem the way they were back in my happy days in Amsterdam. Then, we saw occasional pleasure boats, innumerable houseboats and many workboats, oh, yes, Sinter Klaus arrived by boat. But mostly the canals were places to store unwanted things, like shopping carts, stolen cars and bicycles and trash.
It's glorious to see the pictures of activity op het water vandaag. Cheers, Lewis

Hi Lewis, Normally we stay away from the canals you mentioned. But when we cross the bridge of the Stadionkade we almost always see a sloop come by, all sorts of. In the past the boats were mostly Jordaankruisers, diminutive versions of larger yachts built in the attic, or in the back garden, barely saved from sinking. Ari

My Promised Land

In the Spring of 2002 Roger Sparks was traveling
with a virgin agenda when he landed
in America on the off chance, so it seemed at first.
But he had a plan, to meet Dr. Robert Ballard,
the discoverer of the Titanic.
