A couple snaps from around Providence, today. One shows the apparent penalty for parking without a permit... the other demonstrates the Rhode Island Department of Transportation's warm feelings for pedestrians. Hope all's proceeding happily over there. We keep seeing photos of a glamorous young woman with gray/white hair sipping coffee, riding her bike... all of which is evidence of her good health, I'd say. Lewis

Verona, a month ago we were in Verona. Late in the afternoon we strolled through this narrow street, which I naturally wanted to photograph. On the corner stood this tall character, wearing a black Yiddish skullcap. I addressed him in English to point out what I was looking for, that I didn’t want a photo of him, although he made quite a picture in the dark red sweater against the ochre colored wall. Okay, he reacted, you don’t want me in your picture, I understand. Though this was expressly not what I wanted. We continued talking. Within five minutes we covered more than twenty issues. He told us he lived in Verona more than fourteen years. He hated Italians, and most of all those living in Verona. Originally he lived in California. And he loved old cars. After he gave us a tour in a nearby synagogue he brought up Amsterdam, and asked me whether I knew a certain photographer living near the Beethovenstraat. The Californian said that the photographer also loved fine automobiles. After saying I didn’t know him he gave me his phone number, asking to pass it on when I should meet him. But the note was lost. I told this story to a friend living in the same apartment building who immediately responded that she knew both, the photographer and the Californian Italian, she really did! Before we said goodbye he gave us hints and suggestions to how to travel to Venice, where I only should mention his name to get kosher food and cheap lodgings.

My Promised Land

In the Spring of 2002 Roger Sparks was traveling
with a virgin agenda when he landed
in America on the off chance, so it seemed at first.
But he had a plan, to meet Dr. Robert Ballard,
the discoverer of the Titanic.
