This photo of the late Koen Wessing was made by Joost Guntenaar in 1995 for a series with the theme “Colleages Without Film” - 25 photographers who at the time didn’t believe in digital cameras. Koen was a colorful concerned people photographer and well known for his black and white photos he made all over the world.

Hotel staff take journalists’ camaras in Cairo. Meredith Birkett writes: Photojournalist Ron Haviv spent the day photographing the clashes in and around Tahrir Square in Cairo, working despite many reports of journalist being arrested, or worse, being attacked and having gear smashed by protesters or police. He said he was able to keep working by trying to avoid anyone who looked like an authority figure. Haviv managed to leave the square safely by traveling in a pack of anti-government protesters, who helped him avoid being singled out by pro-government groups. Pro-government forces have been attacking journalists based on a perception that the media is sympathetic to the anti-government side. He arrived safely at his hotel, but that’s when trouble began. The hotel staff took his camera gear, and the equipment of other journalists staying in the hotel. The hotel staffers said they were instituting a new policy that does not allow anyone to photograph from the building's balconies. Despite the challenges, Haviv filed images from today. But will he work tomorrow? It’s not clear when or if he’ll get his gear back. Source.

PiCycle: the hybrid electric bicycle with embedded Wi-Fi technology.
Combining an electric motor with a form factor that has remained largely unchanged for over a hundred years, hybrid electric bicycles make it easier to get around in an environmentally friendly way, while still providing some much needed exercise. One of the most distinctive electric bikes going around is the PiCycle. The latest model from Pi Mobility retains the instantly recognizable arch frame of its predecessor, but has been simplified even further and now offers the option of integrated Wi-Fi-based technology to remotely monitor the 2011 PiCycle’s performance and track the bike if it is stolen.

Floating megacity designed for the banks of the Mississippi.
Arcologies, which are essentially entire cities crammed into a single high population density megastructure, are still the realm of science fiction – or games such as Simcity. But with the rebuilding of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina ongoing, a group of designers have come up with the proposal for just such a structure designed to sit on the bank of the Mississippi. Called the New Orleans Arcology Habitat (NOAH), the structure would house 40,000 residents along with all services and amenities that would allow them to live their entire lives within its walls if they so desired. Ford GT returns as hybrid! Ford's new supercar features V8 hybrid drivetrain and will take on McLaren and Ferrari - but cost less than both.

It’s take three for the Ford GT! Auto Express has learned that the blue oval is readying an all-new mid-engined supercar – and it’s set to feature hybrid power. The model follows on from the original Sixties GT40, as well as the GT, built between 2005 and 2006. It will take aim at Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren by using the most advanced technology available to deliver massive straight-line performance. And our exclusive images predict how the Detroit missile is shaping up. In a bid to distance the new model from the 2005 GT, of which only 100 examples reached Europe, there will be a new design direction. While the GT used plenty of styling cues from the original GT40 racer of the Sixties, the latest interpretation is likely to forego the retro body panels and get a sharper, more modern look. The Acabion GTBO 450 km/h road registerable streamliner.
Bugatti Veyron owners, and indeed car owners as a group, have been looking very smug since the amazing supercar posted its awesome 250mph top speed and 1000 horsepower acceleration that not even the fastest motorcycles could match. But it seems Acabion has taken the crown back for the bike brigade, with its release of a road-ready streamliner that's capable of beating they Veyron's top speed using only 20% throttle. The Acabion GTBO is said to top out at around 340mph (close to 550kmh) if you're game enough to hold on to 50% throttle, and with engines varying from 350 to 750 horsepower, it's a very serious piece of kit... Even if it does have training wheels. More.

We drive the Volkswagen XL1 - world’s most economical car -
to see what it feels like to return 313mpg.

By Mike Rutherford

It’s the world’s most efficient car – and Auto Express has driven it! Revealed at the Qatar Motor Show, the quirky, low-slung VW XL1 gets gullwing doors, a two-cylinder turbodiesel engine and a 20kW electric motor.
With rear wheel covers, an F1-style carbon fibre monocoque, and other ultra-lightweight materials such as magnesium wheels, it’s meant to show how economical cars can be, boasting 300mpg-capability. But what’s it like to drive? Open the gullwing door and you sit very low in the cabin. However, that’s not an issue because the driving seat and steering wheel positions are spot-on.
The overall look and feel of the XL1’s less-is-more cabin is beyond VW’s usually high standards, though. Press the logically positioned start button and the car’s heart silently starts to beat without indicating to the driver that it is doing so. Pulse starting, VW calls it.
Slide the gearstick back as far as possible while nervously tickling the accelerator pedal, and the car launches itself with more vigour than it has a right to in view of its undeniably modest powerplants. A combination of virtually silent running, futuristic supercar styling and unprecedented on-road presence stops bewildered pedestrians and fellow drivers in their tracks.
