http://www.worldpressphoto.org/ De winnaar van World Press Photo 2011 is een portret van de verminkte Afghaanse tiener Bibi Aisha, gemaakt door de Zuid-Afrikaanse fotografe Jodi Bieber. Dat maakte de organisatie van de jaarlijkse fotowedstrijd vandaag bekend. Op bevel van de taliban werden bij Bibi Aischa de neus en de oren afgesneden omdat ze haar gewelddadige man had verlaten. De foto, die op 1 augustus 2010 de voorpagina van het Amerikaanse weekblad Time sierde, schokte de wereld. De Afghaanse heeft inmiddels in de Verenigde Staten een plastische reconstructie ondergaan en woont nu in de VS. Bij de winnaars van de prestigieuze fotoprijs zitten ook drie Nederlanders: Chris Keulen in de categorie sportreportages, Martin Roemers in dagelijks leven en Joost van den Broek in portretten. Bieber is de tweede Zuid-Afrikaanse fotograaf ooit die de hoogste prijs ontvangt. Ze won eerder acht prijzen in diverse categorieën. "Dat meisje" Volgens juryvoorziiter David Burnett is het portret van Bieber een van die foto's waarvan iedereen meteen weet wat je bedoelt als je het hebt over "dat meisje''. Jurylid Ruth Eichhorn noemt de winnende foto een "ongelooflijk sterk beeld dat een krachtige boodschap uitstraalt naar de wereld''. De jury van World Press Photo heeft prijzen toegekend in negen categorieën aan 56 fotografen. Ze komen uit 23 landen. De negen juryleden moesten zich buigen over ruim honderdduizend inzendingen. Fotografe Bieber ontvangt haar prijs - 10.000 euro - op 7 mei in Amsterdam. De winnende foto's zijn te zien op een tentoonstelling in de Oude Kerk in de hoofdstad tussen 22 april en 9 juni.
