For the 2010 America's Cup races, the Swiss billionaire who heads the defending Alinghi syndicate, Ernesto Bertirelli, decided to forego the traditional giant sloop design and build a monumental 28 meter long catamaran. The problem is that America's Cup boats have to be built in the country of the team... in this case Switzerland.
So the Swiss built their boat, named it Allinghi, and plopped it into Lake Geneva for testing. Then, for sea trials they wanted to get it to the Mediterranean... on the other side of the Alps. Easiest way was across the St. Bernhard pass to Genoa. Hence the magnificent helicopter shot(s). The Swiss, who won the last races, are preparing to defend the America's Cup against Larry Ellison, the multi billionaire head of Oracle software. Not to be outdone, Ellison's BMW-Oracle boat is a monster three-hulled trimaran. Lewis.
