"And once more," said Erik Verhaest, "down the hill again."

So, we went to New Jersey for New Year's celebrations. They were still digging themselves out of 27 inches of snow.
On Saturday, I pulled into a parking space and applied the brakes. We stopped, and then, very slowly, the brake pedal went straight to the floor. Carefully we got out of the parking space and drove extremely slowly using engine braking, to the house where we were staying. We waited until Monday, and had the car hauled to a garage.

When my host realized he had a sales call he could make in Cambridge, we got into his Toyota Prius and drove to Providence (at 49 miles-per-gallon) . Spent the night, and left fiirst thing in the morning to Cambridge. NOTE: there is NO EXIT 17.

As soon as the sales call was over, got back into the Prius and headed back to New Jersey, pausing on the way in a Michael Paul Smith stage setting for some model pizza and a glimpse of a full-scale model Rhode Island State Trooper patrol car.

Finally, the adventure concluded as we rode off toward Jersey into a dramatic sunset. Picked up the Audi this morning and drove back to Providence with a quick visit to the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven. Cheers, Lewis

In Memoriam Gert Enklaar,
renowned motoring journalist, with Erik Verhaest,
car buff and motoring pr man.
------

That really is a bright spark:
Snapper captures the moment a huge lightning bolt strikes Statue of Liberty.

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER_Last updated at 11:06 AM on 13th October 2010
This is the amazing moment a lightning bolt was captured as it struck the iconic Statue of Liberty.

The impressive image was caught by New York photographer Jay Fine who spent the night braving the storm in Battery Park City, Manhattan, in a bid to get the perfect picture.
Mr Fine spent nearly two hours poised with his camera and took more than 80 other shots before striking lucky with this particular bolt of lightning at 8.45pm on September 22.Bolt from the blue: Jay Fine captured this incredible image as lightning strikes the Statue of Liberty in New York harbour
The 58-year-old, who has been trying for more than 40 years to capture the magnificent moment, said he was stunned when he saw the image.
He said: 'I had been watching weather reports so I knew a storm was coming and it just seemed like a great opportunity.
'I was ready and waiting when the lightning finally started and took 81 shots before finally getting this one.
'I was shocked when I realized what had happened.
'It was pure luck really, a once in a lifetime opportunity. It's the first photograph of its kind I have ever seen.'
