Week 36 2011, from September 5th. |
We made another jump across the crossing, starting on the Willemsparkweg, from as far as SuitSupply, in the direction of the Stedelijk Museum, which will be closed again for an unknown period. If we just made it over the naked, protruding tram rails it would be as easy as eating a muffin at the Bagels&Beans. It had become darker, not the weather of the forecast. |
Early in the morning it was still quiet in the city, so we wouldn’t be hindered by disturbing onlookers while performing our stunt. The light was fair, although we had hoped for a little sunshine. The plan was to make a spectacular, stunning jump in the legendary tradition of the Flying Finn Erik Carlsson across the crossing of the Van Baerlestraat and the Willemsparkweg, which was deserted during a reconstruction except for an occasional tram, but no other traffic that otherwise would have been killing. This was to be a sad tribute to SAAB, that the coming week probably will fall into foreclosure. The engine of the astonishing replica (by Neo) of Carlsson’s rally car purred reassuringly. We opened the turnstile barrier, drove back to the Vondelpark bridge to take a running for a flying start so to speak, heading for the little ramp which we had laid out, and made the jump as we so often had seen in the documentaries, not to prove anything, nor to draw attention to the appalling plan to close a part of the Van Baerlestraat in front of the Stedelijk Museum, no we did it just for kicks, to prove that it could be done. (Thanks to the GVB.) |

Last year at Basel World, Chronoswiss introduced a host of new watches, including the Régulateur 24 Limited Edition, 3000 pieces. As the name indicates the watch is a Regulator with a 24 hour indicator. Regulators recently have come back into fashion, modeled after the precision timepieces placed in watchmaking ateliers, so watchmakers could set watches to the absolutely correct time. The Régulateur 24 comes in a 20-part 40 mm case crafted case in 18 carat red gold, and is water resistant to 30 metres. At QP it was said that when in doubt a demonstration could be organized. |

![]() Alaska conference mulls 'cargo airships'. Enlarge photo. You're looking at that picture of bulbous airships descending on an arctic oil rig and we know what you're thinking. Stick with us. What if fuel arrived in remote Alaska villages by blimp instead of barge? What if you didn't need to build ice roads to distant oil and gas projects because you could haul your heavy equipment slung beneath a giant airship? Those are some of the ideas being pitched at a two-day meeting called "Cargo Airships for Northern Operations" that began Wednesday at the University of Alaska Anchorage. It's hard to say how pie-in-the-sky they are — colossal, expensive ideas have an uneven history in Alaska — but Pete Worden, director for NASA's Ames Research Center in California is a believer. ![]() Volkswagen Nils concept, single-seater pure electric concept is designed for the commuter of the future. The Renault Twizy has started a trend. First came the Audi Urban Concept, which we'll learn more about in Frankfurt, and now VW has entered the fray with a tiny electric city car of its own. The pod-like Volkswagen NILS, is the firm's vision of a commuter device for the future. With space for just one passenger its constructed entirely from aluminium, keeping weight down to 460kg, and uses an electric motor mounted behind the driver to power the rear wheels. More. |
![]() Vauxhall reveals electric city car. Surprise concept from Vauxhall will rival the VW Nils with an electric drivetrain giving 60-mile range and a 75mph top speed. You wait ages for a radical new electric city car, and two turn up at once. Joining the Volkswagen Nils on the stands at Frankfurt next week will be this surprise model from Vauxhall. Bosses haven’t revealed its name yet, but these official pictures reveal a low, rakish body. The battery car – which wears Opel badges in our images – takes cues from the range-extending hybrid Ampera at the front, with a prominent grille and elongated LED headlamp design. The glasshouse sweeps abruptly upwards and towards a motorbike-inspired rear end. More. |

I wish they had never stopped producing this car, styled like this. The original Europa had such character and unique styling, that you knew it was driver’s car from the word ‘Go’. I’ve seen one at an autocross in person, and I’ve wanted to drive one hard ever since. Davin. |
